The Marmalade Society
a fellowship of homemakers, menders & bakers
A small society for those who believe the joys of ordinary moments — a warm loaf straight from the oven, a kind word, an unhurried afternoon, a strong cup of tea — are perfectly reasonable adventures.
The Marmalade Society began as a yearning for kindred spirits who share the same desire to keep track of how much they love, not how much they get done in a day. To be imperfect, to use the pretty tea set on the top shelf, to bake a cake for no reason at all.
What we do with our ordinary days is not us waiting for life to begin — it is the whole point.
What We Believe
- Small things, done with love, make a home holy.
- We don't rush through the day; we make space for what is important.
- We choose wonder over worry.
- We always bake a little extra for someone who needs cheering up.
- We use stationery and send kind notes, even when there is no occasion.
- We invite people in.
- We offer our time to the Lord by loving those He has given us.
- Pastel. Always pastel.
Ask Mrs. Marzipan
The Society keeps a little correspondence column. Members write in with whatever is troubling them — a difficult friendship, a season of recovery or anxiety, loneliness — and I write back with a gentle word and a prescription: a baked good, chosen for the ailment, with the recipe to make it. I firmly believe that there is no trouble a warm kitchen cannot soften.
A difficult friendship
Cinnamon Buns
For the patience they ask, and the sweetness they leave behind.
Anxious thoughts
Gingerbread Cookies
Spiced, steadying, and best made slowly.
Loneliness
A Sharing Loaf
Bake two — keep one, and carry the other to a neighbour.
Heartbreak
Carrot Cake
Sweet, spiced, and quietly restoring — slow comfort for a heart that needs mending.
Weariness
Cardamom Twists & Strong Tea
Warm, fragrant, and best with your feet up — permission to sit down.
A bruised spirit
Victoria Sponge Cake
Feather-light, layered with jam and cream — a small, pretty kindness on a heavy day.
To write in
Send your letter to Mrs. Marzipan below — sign it or stay anonymous, as you please. Every confidence is kept, and a remedy is baked for each.
Won't you join us — won't you become one of the Kindred? It would be so much more merry if you would. Your tea and cardamom twist is waiting for you.
